If you’re looking for something fun to do, grab Off the Beaten (Subway) Track by Suzanne Reisman. This book lists dozens and dozens of unusual sites and scenes you can see in New York City and surroundings, including directions, street addresses, and phone numbers. Tip: This book isn’t just for native New Yorkers. The very detailed descriptions make you feel as if you’ve been there.[Worth buying?] For sheer entertainment value and to seek out the unusual, yes.

I'm very glad that she enjoyed the book!

5 Stars from the Midwest Book Review

Goodness, when it rains, it truly pours! In the October 2008 issue of The Midwest Book Review, Off the Beaten (Subway) Track received the following praise:

There are so many books on New York's attractions that one might wonder at the need for yet another, but this book is a key and the first to focus on a hundred off-the-beaten-path destinations, from small museums and nearly forgotten historic places to odd shops and small oddities. A geographic arrangement aids in the journey, with chapters offering addresses, hours, directions, web sites, and long paragraphs of enticing description. Recommended for any travel library strong in New York City attractions.

The MBR also gave OTBST a five star rating on Amazon.

OTBST Named One of 10 Indispensable Guides to NYC!

It's been a little while since I blogged any news about the book, but I am ecstatic to note that Julie Schietert at MatadorGoods named Off the Beaten (Subway) Track as one of ten indispensable guidebooks about New York City. I hope I get more opportunities like this.

"Off the Beaten (Subway) Track" is Getting Around

Take a gander at the interview I had with Patricia Jenkins at uptake.com, a fantastic travel blog for family trips.

Also, Barnes & Noble finally has Off the Beaten (Subway) Track in its New York stores.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_7zVD9BEemZQ/SJjVgjCmrII/AAAAAAAAACQ/JEsxeFHl_AQ/s200/IMG_2782.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5231165722329525378" />Very exciting.

For anyone who lives in New York City, I'm hosting a book party on Sat., Aug. 9. It's my hope that the book will encourage people to hop on the subway for an adventure, just like millions of curiosity-seekers do every year when they set out on the open highway for a road trip. New York is a vibrant city in every way, although gentrification threatens many of the quirkier aspects of the life here. The book contains things to see and do in all five boroughs (yes, even Staten Island has interesting aspects!).

I'm hoping that people will be willing to share their favorite off the beaten track things in New York City as well. The Off the Beaten (Subway) Track blog will have a post for each borough. The skyscrapers, glamor, and wealth of narrow island purchased in the 1600 by Peter Minuet is what most people picture when they think about "New York City." Sure, it has more people per square mile than anywhere else in the country, but you can also lose yourself in the wilderness of Inwood Park.
